GAZA 4 – Eid al-Adha

Eid al-Adha, the important religious holiday celebrated by Muslims all around the world, represents sacrifice and submission to God.

Meaning of Eid al-Adha is about willingness to follow God’s orders, as it’s written – Muslim prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) had a repeating dreams in which God commanded him to do unimaginable act. He was ordered to sacrifice at that time his only son Ismael (Ishmael) , which God had granted to him after many years of prayer. Obedient to father, Ismael accepted this sacrifice, saying “”Father, do what you have been commanded. “

Abraham could not bear to watch his son die so he covered his eyes by a blindfold. When he cut Ishmael’s throat and removed the blindfold, he was astonished to see that Ishmael was unharmed and instead, he found a dead ram which was slaughtered. Abraham had passed the test by his willingness to carry out God’s command.

Muslims celebrate holiday for four days by prayers, gathering of the families, seeing friends and giving gifts to each other. On the first day of Eid al-Adha, a bull is slaughtered by seven partners which later equally share the meat with the families. On average, price of the bull in Gaza is about 5000 NIS (shekels). One third of each share is meant for the family, the second for the wider group of relatives and neighbors and the last third is given away for free to poor people and people in need. Also many festive activities were held throughout the Gaza, as in time of Eid, people are free of job.
